The musculoskeletal system supports the body in two ways: it stabilizes all movement and supports the weight of the body. The whole musculoskeletal system functions together as one unit and is prone to injury and/or degeneration due to aging. These are the most common causes for pain, stiffness, swelling, and problems related to movement.
Ayurveda utilizes a very special therapy that builds strength and nourishes the bones, muscles, joints and nerves and improves flexibility and movement. The therapy is called Abhyanga, which is a full body oil massage followed by steam bathing or warm water bathing. The heat from the warm steam or water helps the oil penetrate deeply into the layers of skin and tissues. When Abhyanga therapy is done daily, there is profound relief from pain, stiffness, inflammation, and nerve degeneration..
Nourishing Ayurvedic Therapy
One of the best oils for daily Abhyanga is Kshirabala Oil. This oil is made from three highly nourishing ingredients: sesame oil, cow’s milk, and an herb called bala. Bala is a Sanskrit word which translates into strength or resiliency. Kshirabala Oil is an ancient Ayurvedic oil traditionally used for conditions related to vata imbalances, and especially for the musculoskeletal system. Its rejuvenating properties support damaged bones, muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves.
The main ingredient bala, is a powerful herb for supporting the nervous and is well-known for its rejuvenating properties and reducing pain caused by irritated nerves. Its main use is for vata disorders but is also useful for pitta neurological disorders with excess heat in the body. Kshirabala Oil is neuroprotective, nerve tonic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-arthritic.
Kshirabala oil balances both vata and pitta dosha, supports and nourishes vata and pitta disorders related to the muscles, bones, nerves, and joints, and is especially a nervine tonic.
Usage: Apply with massage strokes 1 - 2 tablespoons of Kshirabala Oil daily. It is used externally for the Ayurvedic therapy called Abhyanga to balance the vata dosha and nourish muscles, bones, and nerves.
